I imagined Russia to be cold in terms of emotion and weather. I envisioned Russia as depicted in Shostakovich’s 8th Symphony – a cold repressed place with a blanket of cold clouds covering any warmth. When I returned, my impressions of Russia had changed enormously. Beneath the cold exterior there was hidden a radiant emotional and cultural warmth. Be it in an evening of traditional Russian folk dancing or a concert of virtuoso, classical ballet, there was an obvious glow of pride and pleasure.

My personal favourite of our expeditions was a boat trip around the canals and rivers of St Petersburg. From here was where I got the best perception of the majestic splendour of St Petersburg.

Every person from Russia I had the pleasure of getting to know was absolutely lovely. From our host Natalia (a thoroughly kind woman who is also a great cook) to our guide Elena who seemed to know everying there is to know about St Petersburg. I enjoyed visiting the homes of the Russian Pushkin winners.

The day I left I was sad to be going. But as I left, I realised my first impressions were very misjudged and departed feeling happy that I had enjoyed such an interesting experience.
